Grading Theatre & Client Review Rooms

The team use a number of high-end displays and were looking for enhanced calibration to ensure their ‘Prosumer’ displays were as accurate as their ‘Enterprise’ broadcast spec displays. Although these displays have some form of inbuilt colour adjustment, the required accuracy over greyscale and colour representation when viewing drama or film content is critical. Any noticeable inaccuracies must be removed as this can cause clients to lose faith in what they are seeing.
Deploying highly accurate calibration for HDMI devices was considered cost prohibitive, particularly across the different suites, yet without it, clients may question the differences in monitors, even if slight. When using a projector, any odd shifts in skin tones or greyscale issues on a flat surface in scenes (e.g. walls or skies) may cause the client to think that there were unusual colours in these areas. In fact, it’s that the calibration is not accurate and using internal menus wasn’t enough, even ‘auto calibration’ provided in the display itself didn’t fix greyscale tracking either.

As a result, the team have been looking for an affordable solution to profile their displays with ColourSpace display calibration software and then apply a calibration LUT (look up table) to provide the accuracy needed across the HDMI based display devices. The team discovered the Tetratune Video Processor, a new product designed and developed in the UK that can not only load various LUTs, but split screen them and work seamlessly with the ColourSpace software too.

Having found this new solution, the team decided to use the Tetratune in their grading theatre where it has been used with a JVC DLA-RS4100 projector for both P3D65 and REC709 setups. Working closely with the Videworks team to make sure the product met expectations, the product slotted easily into the signal chain, with its HDMI connectivity and web interface allowing easy control. Its split screen feature makes comparisons a simple process. In addition, the team can load multiple LUTs for easy selection, use the bypass feature, and utilise a test patch generator built into the unit, streamlining the display tuning process.

The icing on the cake is the close integration with the ColourSpace software that the team already uses.
The Tetratune LUT workflow simplifies the setup of grading sessions, the web interface allows quick selection of the LUT with accurate display of the correct colour space, avoiding any need for ‘menu diving’ on remotes!
Overall, the team at The Look have been delighted with the Tetratune with CEO & Senior Colourist Thomas Urbye commenting...
